Grade 3 spelling practice
Practice the choice behind the word.
Grade-level lists often mix endings, vowel patterns, word families, and words with an unexpected letter sequence.
One list can ask for several kinds of thinking
A third-grade list might include hopping, friend, and a homophone in the same week. A child does not benefit from hearing one slogan for all three. The useful question is what spelling choice this particular word asks them to make.
Use conditions, not slogans
For hopping, the relevant contrast is hop + ing versus hope + ing: the short-vowel base doubles the p. For a word with an unusual letter order, an accurate visual or word-family cue can be more useful than pretending there is a general rule.
Leave room for classroom teaching
The student routine is deliberately short: listen, spell, get a focused cue if necessary, and try again later. It supports the words already being taught rather than becoming another long program.
